June Theme: Managing, Meeting and Exceeding Client Expectations

This month’s theme was suggested by Russell Alexander, and is a good one.

Expectations.

expectations plural of ex·pec·ta·tion (Noun)

Noun:
  1. A strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future.
  2. A belief that someone will or should achieve something.

Such is what Google returns when you use its “define” feature.

From a kid to an adult, we are surrounded by expectations. Do well in school. Make friends. Go to college. Get a job. Start a career. Get married. Start a family. As we grow and develop, we learn how to manage our expectations, and to some extent, the expectations of others. From time to time, we exceed our expectations as well, be it doing well on the bar exam, winning a big case or making it home in time for the kid’s birthday party of baseball game. Big or small, they are still expectations.

So how then, are we to transfer these skills to that of running a solo or small law firm? What does managing, meeting and exceeding client expectations mean in your law firm environment?
