January’s Theme: Measuring Goals
By Gwynne Monahan
Here’s what I sent to our growing Contributor list:
I confess I’ve had a hard time coming up with a theme for January. Goals seems so cliche, as do predictions.
So, instead, how about how you measure your goals for the first quarter of a new year. Setting goals is easy. Tracking progress and achievement, on the other hand, is a challenge.
It’s true. I had a hard time thinking of a theme for January that didn’t seem cliche. End of the year is all about lists lists lists. Beginning of the year is all about setting goals. The gym is packed with people who set fitness goals. I didn’t set foot in the gym until February, when the New Year’s crowd stopped going. And that is what got me thinking.
It occurred to me that setting goals is easy. Following through, tracking progress and achievement, however, is a challenge.
So this month we’re focusing on how to measure goals, be it personal, business or a combination. I know from #freelancing and consulting, business and personal goals often mixed. Getting out more, for example, be it conferences, local networking events or a monthly game night, was both a personal and professional goal.
I just moved to Vancouver, BC, CA so getting out is a goal for me. New place. New city. New people. I have to build my social network from scratch. Tracking the growth of my network will done through activities in which I participate. Joining a running club, for example. A recreational league basketball team. Getting involved with Social Media Club Vancouver.
Hopefully, in March or April, I’ll be able to report on some new network roots from which my new city social network can grow and prosper for the rest of 2012.
So, on this 13th day of January, how are you going to track your first quarter 2012 goals?
